I can appreciate the frustration of all who are still looking for a solution with the LJ 1000 that will work for them, but I would suggest, that in the meantime, that you also keep your eyes and ears open for a good deal on the Samsung printer. My personal experience is that this is a great printer that has been available for quite a while but is usually under the radar from published printer purchase recommendations.

This printer will work with any 32 bit or 64 bit operating system - all the drivers are there. They are black and white only, have a lower profile than the HP LJ 1000, and toner is readily available and relatively inexpensive on the Internet. My son bought a similar Samsung model at Fry's Electronics for even less than that a few months after I got mine.

Install the host based drivers on the WinXP machine. The printer will NOT be physically attached to the Windows 7 machine. Of course, I can print just fine from an XP machine in the same workgroup. Your Windows 7 machine will be somewhere on the network. Host the HP Laserjet 1000 on a 32-bit machine like WinXP. He should know since he would need to service them if they didn't work - his clients would be after him all the time. They are fast, reliable, and true work horses. My son-in-law buys these by the boatload and uses them for his clients who are third-party motor vehicle service providers.
I found the perfect inexpensive but very reliable replacement: Samsung ML-2851ND. It has been ages since I first posted on this problem with the LJ 1000 since my LJ 1000 died over 9 months ago.

Now, whenever I print I just select the PDF Creator printer and voila! The document is printed on the LJ1000 just like old times. Next, on my Windows 7 I created a new network printer and selected the PDF Creator. Next I set the new PDF Creator printer as a sharable printer. Then I told it to print after the save to the LJ1000 hooked to it via USB. Then I configured PDF Creator to auto-save to a specific folder (using timedate as default name). Installed PDF Creator ( /projects/ pdfcreator) on my XP box instead and set it up as a network printer (so it would download a variety of drivers for 95, 98, xp, vista, Windows 7, etc). I found this on the web and was able to connect my HP laserjet 1000 to my win7 64-bit laptop. Can you please be more specific about this latest way to use PDF Creator to set up a win7 64-bit system connected directly to the Laserjet 1000 via USB?Ĭan this work with the XP box out of the picture after it's all set up?
